Some interesting Facts and Symbolic Meanings of Elephants:

The elephant has been a symbol of the Republican Party of the United States ever since 1874, when Harper's Weekly published a cartoon of an elephant trampling on inflation and chaos. Historically linked to the era of British colonialism in India, it entered popular culture folk-magic during the late 19th century and probably reached its apotheosis in the 1930s. Ever since Elephant figurines and charms are popular tokens of Good Luck.
Due to its long life spans Elephants are a Symbol of overcoming death. Elephant figurines placed on shelves or by doorways are said to endure longevity and luck.
The birth of Buddha was announced by a white elephant. Buddha is said to have chosen a white elephant as one of his many incarnations, and it thus assumes the qualities of wisdom and patience. White elephants are rare and their appearance is still considered a phenomenon of the gods.
Figurine and charms in the form of elephant heads won't produce luck unless the trunk is in an upright position. Figures of Elephants placed outside houses should always face the doorway to ensure they will bring Luck to the household.
The elephant is the largest animal that lives on land. Some male elephants can grow to be thirteen feet tall. That's more than twice as tall as many human adults. Elephants stomp when they walk, they sleep standing up and they weigh up to 10,000 pounds. Only grown up females and their babies live in the herds because the male elephants leave the herd when they are 12 years old.
Thohoyandou was one of the greatest vhaVenda leaders of all times. Thohoyandou literally means "head of the elephant" and this is an important indication in the Venda tradition of his strength as a leader. Elephants have always been used in African mythology as a symbol of strength, leadership and greatness. Even today this symbolism is continued where important people are greeted with "nda ndou" which literally can be translated as "good day elephant". It is further interesting to note that no future VhaVenda leader was ever called Thohoyandou.
The origins of the lucky elephant charm can be found in the Hindu religion of India. Ganesha, also known as Vinayaka, is the elephant-headed Hindu god of wisdom, literature and worldly success. He is thought to derive from an animistic deity, possibly a Dravidian (aboriginal) sun god. Ganesha is a propitious god, promising success, prosperity, and peace and is invoked before any sort of enterprise. It is his responsibility to decide between success and failure, to remove obstacles or create them as necessary. Being an elephant he passes through the thickest of wild growth in a forest, uproots and tears to smithereens the thickest trees hindering his path and fells out whatever comes in his way.
